County Hosts Abuse Prevention Conference July 15

DuPage County invites the community to learn more about preventing abuse and neglect of seniors and disabled adults at the 2nd Annual Adult Protective Services Conference, "A Collaborative Community Approach." This free, educational event is aimed at medical professionals, home health care workers, clergy, social workers and families interested in recognizing and preventing abuse and exploitation of seniors and disabled adults.  The event begins at 8 a.m. at the College of DuPage on Wednesday, July 15. New to the conference this year will be information sessions on adult self-neglect often expressed through hoarding behavior.

DuPage County Health and Human Services Committee Chairman Bob Larsen said as the nation's senior and disabled adult populations increase, so too do the corresponding service demands. Illinois' Elder Abuse and Neglect program experienced a 47% increase in reports since 2002.

"There is a steady demand for community education on abuse prevention. In just two years, we have seen participation in this conference grow to include professionals from all over our region. We know our efforts to educate caregivers are working as more cases of abuse and exploitation are being reported. The more awareness and education we provide, the more we can protect seniors and disabled adults, so they can remain safe in their neighborhoods and their homes," said Larsen.

The conference features a day of presentations providing information on setting up guardianship, the impact of domestic violence on disabled adults and seniors, cultural competency when working with vulnerable populations, assessment and treatment of hoarding, self-advocacy, and financial protection. Attendees will also learn about supportive services available through DuPage County and various community organizations.

The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, in Room SRC 2000, at the College of DuPage, 425 Fawell Blvd., Glen Ellyn. Attendees are asked to register for the event in advance by contacting ShaTonya Herring from DuPage County Community Services at (630) 407-6494 or at
