Volunteers Play Special Role in Lives of Convalescent Center Residents

DuPage Convalescent Center volunteers serve as the backbone of the facility by dedicating their time to its residents.

Convalescent Center Executive Director Jen Ulmer said more than 400 volunteers dedicate their service, time and talents at the center.

"We are blessed beyond comparison for each individual volunteer and the gifts they share with our residents. They make a tremendous impact on our organization and the high standard of health and life care in which we take great pride," said Ulmer.

Volunteers play integral roles as they interact with residents in a variety of ways: creating and attending recreational events; sharing their creative talents in the Woodshop and Craft Workshops; providing music for religious services as well as entertainment for the residents. The volunteers also transport residents to activities, work in the Gifts, Etc. Shop; provide companionship through friendship visits; provide clerical assistance to various departments and work alongside residents in the Center's garden.

Health and Human Services Committee Chairman Bob Larsen said it's hard to measure all of the ways volunteers enrich Convalescent Center residents' lives.

"The volunteers' service to the Convalescent Center is irreplaceable. Last year alone, they contributed more than 31,000 hours, which if we put a price tag on it, would add up to a contribution in excess of $700,000.  But of course, that doesn't include the millions of little things volunteers do that are so important to our residents' quality of life. They truly are making the Convalescent Center a better place for all," he said.

The DuPage Convalescent Center is a 360-bed skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility which has served the residents of DuPage County for more than 127 years. The DuPage Convalescent Center is located at 400 N. County Farm Road in Wheaton on the west side of the DuPage County Complex.
