Green Initiatives - Energy Conservation & Efficiency

IL Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity - Incentives & Rebate Programs for Public Sector, Low Income, Market Transformation and Renewable Energy

Under Public Act 95-0481, DCEO, ComEd, and Ameren Illinois have developed and sustained a portfolio of electric energy efficiency programs to achieve certain annual energy savings goals.  Over $55 million is available for the DCEO electric Illinois Energy Now programs.  DCEO is responsible for 25% of the total portfolio and the utilities 75%.  DCEO will utilize approximately 58% of funds on public sector programs, 24% on low income programs, and 10% on market transformation programs.  ComEd and Ameren Illinois electric portfolio programs will be focused on residential, commercial and industrial sectors.

The Natural Gas Energy Efficiency Program authorized by Public Act 96-0033 started June 1, 2011.  Over $25 million is available for incentives to the public sector and low income sector. DCEO is offering an integrated natural gas and electric portfolio.  Ameren Illinois, Nicor, Peoples and North Shore natural gas companies offer natural gas energy efficiency incentives to the commercial, industrial, and residential sectors. Energy Efficiency & Conservation Block (EECBG) Grant - Executive Summary & Full Report

DuPage County received a $4.6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy in October 2009 to implement energy efficiency and conservation projects.  The County implemented 17 projects, selected for the overall community-wide benefits and that would demonstrate the County's leadership with energy efficiency.  The EECBG grant and projects resulted in an energy savings of 7,740,628 kWh since 2009 and energy savings of 2,141,508 kWh from year to year.  Additional environmental benefits and economic development impact included:

  • Savings of 580,891 gallons of motor fuel per year
  • Reduction of 54,000 therms of natural gas
  • 5,599 tons were recycled and diverted from landfill
  • expenditures created the equivalent of 47.40 full time jobs
  • Energy savings was equivalent to 21,390 metric tons of CO2 reduced or the electricity usage to power more than 2,000 homes every year
