High School and College Election Judges
Junior and
Senior High School Student Election Judges
Illinois Statutes provide
the opportunity for high school juniors and seniors, who are not entitled to
vote, to be appointed as election judges if, as of the date of the election at
which the person would serve as a judge, he or she:
- Is a U.S.
citizen
- Lives in DuPage County
- Is a junior or senior in
good standing enrolled in a public or private secondary school
- Has a
cumulative grade point average equivalent to at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale;
- Can obtain the First Judge Application and Nomination form from the Social
Studies Chairman and/or Government teacher at school;
- Has completed
the First Judge Application and Nomination form with all signatures needed and
returned to teacher, to be sent to the Election Division;
- Has
satisfactorily completed the training course for required election judges; and
- Meets all other qualifications for appointment and service as an election
judge.
The student must be available to work from 5:00 a.m.
until approximately 9:00 p.m. on Election Day.
Every effort will be
made to place the student at a polling place near their home.
- Students are compensated for working on Election Day.
- Students
appointed as election judges under this subsection shall not be counted as
absent from school on the day they serve as judges.
The Election
Division firmly believes this is a worthwhile endeavor for everyone
involved, and one which undoubtedly enhances the student’s education in
current events and justifies a one-day excused absence from class.
College Student Election Judges
Illinois Statutes provide the
opportunity for an individual who is not entitled to vote in a precinct or
county to be appointed as an election judge if, as of the date of the election
at which the person would serve as a judge, he or she:
- Is a U.S.
citizen;
- Is currently enrolled in a community college or a public or
private Illinois university or college
- Has a cumulative grade point
average equivalent to at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
- Has satisfactorily
completed the training course for election judges
- Be able to read, write, and speak English
- Be able to work until all duties are completed after the poll close
- Meets all
other qualifications for appointment and service as an election judge
No more than one election judge qualifying under this subsection may
serve per political party per precinct.
Prior to appointment, a judge
qualifying under this subsection must certify in writing to the Election
Division the political party the judge chooses to affiliate with.
- Students are compensated for working on Election Day.
- Students
appointed as election judges under this subsection shall not be counted as
absent from school on the day they serve as judges.
