The regional trails that are managed by the Division of Transportation are the stage for many different events throughout the year.  We permit various types of special events, such as:

  • Municipal or park district special events
  • Organized run, walk, or bicycling rides
  • Non-profit fundraisers
  • School projects
  • Boys and girls scouts events
  • Eagle scouts projects
  • Trails clean-ups

If your not-for-profit group wants to hold an event on the DuPage County trail system, please be aware that you will need a Highway Permit for a special event from the Division of Transportation. To obtain a Highway Permit, please contact the Highway Permitting Department at 630-407-6900 (Monday - Friday 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., excluding holidays) or hwypermits@dupagecounty.gov.

Additional Information

A permit is required for use of the Rugaard Gazebo on the Prairie Path in Villa Park.  Permits for use of the Rugaard Gazebo can be obtained from the Villa Park Parks & Recreation Department.  Please contact the department directly via phone at (630) 834-8525, or through their website at Villa Park - Parks & Recreation to verify their permitting procedures and fees for use of the gazebo.  In addition, you may be required to obtain permission or sponsorship from the municipality in which your event will be held.  Coordination with local law enforcement and/or the DuPage County Sheriff's Department may be necessary as well.  Ask County and municipal staff about any additional requirements to ensure that your event can proceed as planned.

General trail permitting requirements include, but are not limited to:

  • Racing is NOT permitted on the trail system
  • The permittee is required to pick up their event generated debris (including any warning/informational signage)
  • No equipment or materials shall interfere with the movement of pedestrians or bicyclists on the trail

On the Prairie Path and Great Western Trail, all participants will need to obey the Rules of the Trail.  Click the link in the Nav (on the left side of this web page) to familiarize yourself with the rules.
