Job Details for 1322 - EO Senior Staff Auditor

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

GRADE: 313

DEFINITION

Performs assigned professional auditing work of considerable difficulty with direction as appropriate; trains and reviews the work of staff auditors and other employees engaged in professional auditing tasks and related activities; and performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE POSITION

This position is distinguished from the staff auditor position because of its responsibility for training and reviewing the staff auditors’ work and for providing leadership on projects when the County Auditor and/or Chief Deputy Auditor deem it appropriate to delegate that responsibility. An employee in this class has responsibility for:

  1. Assisting the County Auditor and Chief Deputy Auditor with planning and developing audit programs for financial, compliance, and operational audits.
  2. Assisting the County Auditor and Chief Deputy Auditor with developing audit work procedures; training and reviewing the work of staff auditors.
  3. Being a team leader when leadership is requested by the County Auditor and/or Chief Deputy Auditor.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

  1. Performs financial, compliance, and operational audits both independently and as lead auditor, as assigned.
  2. Reviews the work and audit work papers of staff auditors.
  3. Prepares draft audit reports.
  4. Assists office staff in the pre-audit of claims for payment.
  5. Works on special projects as assigned.

RELEVANT KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  1. Considerable knowledge of Generally Accepted Government Auditing Standards.
  2. Considerable knowledge of accounting and auditing principles, practices, and methods including governmental accounting.
  3. Considerable knowledge of risk assessments and internal control.
  4. Good knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access), Enterprise Resource Planning systems, Adobe, web publishing, and other general office skills.
  5. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  6. Ability to constructively review the work of others.

PERFERRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  1. Completion of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent is required, preferred in Accounting, Auditing, Business Administration, or related field
  2. Three years experience in auditing work, including one year of governmental work
  3. One year experience in training or supervising
  4. Equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered

PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION

This position requires at least one of the following professional certifications which must be active and/or current.

  1. Certified Public Accountant
  2. Certified Internal Auditor
  3. Certified Information Systems Auditor
  4. Certified Fraud Examiner
  5. Other relevant certifications

Under general supervision; performs work of moderate difficulty in professional auditing work; and performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE POSITION

An employee in this class is responsible for performing internal financial, compliance or operational audits.  Work is performed under general supervision of the County Auditor, Chief Deputy Auditor, or Senior Staff Auditor.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES 

  1. Perform financial, compliance, and operational audits both independently and as part of a team.
  2. Assist office staff in the pre-audit of claims for payment.
  3. Work on special projects as assigned.
