History and Growth

The signing of the Magna Carta, in 1215 A.D., provided state protection of land ownership. This laid the foundation of what was to become the recorder’s office.

The DuPage County Recorder’s Office is the official land records office for all real estate (properties) located within DuPage County.

The recorder’s primary responsibility is the indexing of documents in the “chain-of-title” to DuPage County land.  Your property and its prior ownership history is recorded (filed) in the DuPage County Recorder’s Office.

Revenue taken in is based on fees collected at the time of recordation.  The fee structure is set by the Illinois State Legislature and is spelled out in the Illinois Compiled Statues.  Monies collected for recordings and other services provided by our office are deposited to the appropriate fund accounts as per the State Statutes, which includes the County’s General Fund.

The Recorder’s Office has seen many changes over the years.  As recently as the mid 1970’s, documents were indexed by hand.  Over time, the office has become completely automated, incorporating the use of rapidly changing technological breakthroughs. A land records imaging system was installed, enabling an individual to retrieve documents from home on their personal computer.

Today, a customer can record a document through e-recording, by mail, or in person.  When a customer utilizes the DuPage County Recorder’s Office to record a document, a receipt is computer generated and their document is available to search within 24 hours.  Previously unavailable information has been made available to view electronically, any time of day.  Title companies and other committed users of our office can access, from their office location, information maintained within our land records system. This has proved to be a great convenience for our customers and a valuable source of revenue for the County and the taxpayers.

Included on this website, we have compiled pertinent information relative to the recordation of documents.  You will also find many items of interest, as well as the current schedule of fees.

Our staff is committed to excellent customer service and is eager to help.
