A Message from DuPage County Treasurer/Collector: Gwen Henry

Dear Property Owners:

The 2021 Property Tax Bills were mailed on April 29th.  In Illinois, our taxes are billed in arrears.  Our 2021 taxes are billed and collected in 2022. Taxes are billed with two installments.  Once more, these due dates are June 1, 2022, and September 1, 2022.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a two-year experience.  I hope we have seen the worst of financial hardships for our DuPage residents.  In the past year, there have been payments to 120,000 homeowners and renters state-wide who suffered covid related expenses. The State of Illinois is offering a new program beginning April 11, 2022.  The program is designed to help homeowners who have fallen behind on mortgage payments and related housing expenses during the COVID pandemic.  The new program offers grants up to $30,000 for past due mortgage payments, property taxes, property insurance, and homeowner and/or condo association dues.  More information can be obtained at www.Illinoishousinghelp.org.

The 2021 tax levy is $3,086,831,783, an increase of 2.3%.  The 2021 tax year assessed property value for DuPage County is $44,058,122,920 (76.2% residential and 23.8% commercial property).  This information would indicate that the average tax rate will decrease by .84% and the average tax bill will increase by 1.46%.  As I have said in prior years, I have never seen an “average bill”.

We can’t write this message without reminding you to check your exemptions shown on your bill.  The most often missed is the senior exemption.  If you are 65 or older, check to make sure you are utilizing this exemption.  We always  have instances of citizens in their 80’s and have never used the exemption.  The taxpayer must apply for this exemption.  For 2021 there are 70,850 senior exemptions resulting in reduction of assessed property value of $353,572,521.

Our office has remained open during the entire pandemic.  Our team is ready to assist you with questions and payments.  Our website is available 24/7, as is our online payment program.  Our website allows you to print a duplicate tax bill, pay your bill, see assessment information, view 5 years of property tax history and 5 years of sale history.

If you have questions, please feel free to contact my office at 630-407-5900 or propertytaxadvocate@dupageco.org.  It is a privilege to serve you.

Gwen Henry, CPA, DuPage County Treasurer
