Chicago Felon Charged with Unlawful Possession  of a Weapon Charges

May 4, 2023

Defendant’s DNA allegedly Found on Weapon Used at Former Indian Lakes Country Club Shooting

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Bloomingdale Director of Police Frank Giammarese announced today bond has been set for a convicted felon from Chicago who allegedly was in possession of a firearm that is connected to a 2021 shooting at the former Indian Lakes Country Club. Travis Peery, 24 (d.o.b. 2/18/1999) of the 8900 block of Dorchester Avenue, appeared in court this morning where Judge Ann Celine O’Hallaren Walsh set bond at $300,000 with 10% to apply in accordance with a previously issued arrest warrant. Peery is charged with one count of Unlawful Use or Possession of Weapons by a Convicted Felon, a Class 2 Felony.

On February 6, 2021, officers responded to a call of shots fired at the former Indian Lakes Country Club located on Schick Road. Upon their arrival officers found several shooting victims. One of the victims, James McGill, was transported to a local hospital by others at the hotel prior to the officers’ arrival. McGill was pronounced deceased at the hospital. Through the course of their investigation, authorities recovered several weapons in the snow outside the hotel. One of the weapons recovered, a MPA30T with an extended magazine, is believed to be involved in the shooting. Authorities also viewed a YouTube video that was recorded at the hotel that night on which Peery can allegedly be seen holding the MPA30T with an extended magazine, that was used in the shooting. It is alleged that authorities also found Peery’s DNA on the weapon. Peery was ultimately found in Las Vegas, Nevada and extradited to Illinois approximately one month ago. An investigation into the shooting at the resort continues.

“It is alleged that Mr. Peery thumbed his nose at the law and was illegally in possession of a weapon that was used in the shooting death of Mr. McGill,” Berlin said. “There is no ambiguity here, as a convicted felon, Mr. Peery is prohibited from owning or possessing any firearm. I thank the Bloomingdale Police Department as well as DuPage County MERIT for their outstanding work that led to the identification and apprehension of the defendant in this case. I also thank Assistant State’s Attorney Nicholas Catizone for his extended efforts in preparing a strong case against Mr. Peery.”

“It is indeed a tragedy anytime someone loses their life to gun violence,” Giammarese said. “Incidents such as this impact the entire community and must be seen through to their conclusion. I am extremely proud of the efforts displayed by our Bloomingdale detectives and police officers who worked this case. They worked hard and never gave up. I thank DuPage County MERIT for their assistance in this matter as well as DuPage County State’s Attorney Bob Berlin and his office for their legal guidance and the filing of the appropriate charges.”

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
